Deborah Whipple
was born on September 12, 1681 in Hingham, Plymouth County, Massachusetts.
She is one of seven children born to David Whipple and
Hannah Tower. About 1697 Deborah
married Benjamin Tower, her first
cousin. Deborah and Benjamin were the parents of Gideon, Patience,
Sarah, Margaret, Zipporah, John, Hannah, Benjamin, Hester, Joseph
and Enoch. Deborah died on March 26, 1755 in Cumberland, Providence
County, Rhode Island and was buried in Ballou Cemetery.
David
Whipple was born in 1655 in Dorchester, Massachusetts. He
was one of eleven children born to John Whipple and Sarah
Darling/Hutchinson. David was christened on September 28,
1656. On May 15, 1675, David married Sarah Herndon in Hingham,
Massachusetts and they were the parents David. David married Hannah
Tower on November 11, 1677 in Hingham,
Plymouth County, Massachusetts. David and Hannah were the parents
of Israel, Deborah, Jeremiah, William, Sarah, Hannah and Abigail.
David died on December 18, 1710 in Attleborough, Bristol County,
Massachusetts.
John Whipple was born in 1617
in Milford, Wales or Milford, England. He immigrated in 1637 from
England to Massachusetts. John married Sarah Darling\Hutchinson
in 1639 in Dorchester, Massachusetts. John and Sarah were the
parents of John, Sarah, Samuel, Eleazer, Mary, William, Benjamin,
David, Joseph, Jonathan and Abigail. John was a carpenter by trade
and owned a house and 50 acres of land near Neponset village.
In 1658 he sold his house and land to James Minot and removed
to Rhode Island, settling in Providence. On May 31, 1666, he,
with his son John, took the oath of allegience to King Charles
II of England. In 1669, he was a member of the Town Council of
Providence. He was Town Clerk 1670-2, 1676-7; and 1681-3. He was
deputy to the Rhode Island General Assembly in 1666. In 1676,
he with twenty-five others, voted at a town meeting to stay at
Providence instead of going to Newport, at the time of the King
Philip's War. In 1679, he was apointed by the Rhode Island Colonial
Assembly to serve on a committee to give an account of the late
war with the Indians and make returns to the Assembly. He was
thereafter known as Captain John Whipple. On March 2, 1680, an
Inn license was granted him and the Whipple Inn was established.
John died on May 16, 1685 in Providence, Rhode Island and was
buried in the garden lot near his home. Later his body was reinterned
in the North Burial Ground, Providence, Providence, Rhode Island.
This burial ground was established in 1700 but no records were
kept until 1848. The graves are located in the Whipple Burial
Yard on Eastern Avenue. The Whipple plot is found by going on
Eastern Avenue until the Temple monument is reached on the left.
The plot is about fifty feet northwest of this monument and the
graves of Captain John Whipple and his wife Sarah are located
on Dahlia Path. The stones are well preserved and read as follows:
In Memory of CAPT. JOHN WHIPPLE Who was born in England and died
in Providence The 16th day of May A.D. 1685 About 68 years of
age
Will dated 5/8/1682 and proved 5/27/1685.
Executor was his son Joseph. He premises by saying that having many children and formerly given to three of his sons all his land and meadows at Loquassuck, viz to Samuel. Eleazer and William equally (except 30 acres given John), he now therefore gives to those three sons 1/4 of a right of commonage. To sons Benjamin and David, rights and land. To son Jonathan, 25 acres where he now dwells and rights. To son Joseph, my dwelling house, 3 homelots, garden next the river, etc.. To sons John, Samuel, Eleazer, William, Benjamin, David and Jonathan, 12 d. each. To daughters Sarah, Mary and Abigail, 10s. each. To son Joseph, all rights of land in Narragansett county, and all moveables whatsoever, and he to see the testator decently buried. Inventory 41lbs, 11s., 10d., viz: yoke of oxen, 2 cows, 2 yearlings, 2 years, 2 calves, steer, 3 swines, a feather bed, 7 pewter platters, 5 pewter porringers, 3 old spoons, chisel, gauge, augurs, etc.
Sarah Darling\Hutchinson was born about 1624 in Dorchester, England. Sarah died in 1666 at the age of 42 in Providence, Rhode Island and was buried in the garden lot near her house. Sarah was later reinterned in the North Burial Ground in Providence, Providence, Rhode Island. Her tombstone reads as follows: In Memory of Mrs. Sarah Whipple Who was born in Dorchester, in New England and died in Providence A.D. 1666 Aged about 42 years
