Juliet Smith was born on September 18, 1840 in Castine, Darke County, Ohio. She was the eldest of seven children born to Coleman Smith and Lydia A. Miner. On January 29, 1858 Juliet and Philip Boltin were married by James King, Justice of the Peace in Greenville, Darke County, Ohio. Juliet and Philip had Damaris, Warren Hastings, Lois Hellen, Florence May, Austin Melville and Laura Mabel. Juliet appears on the census on July 6, 1870 in Richland Township, Darke County, Ohio, in the household of Philip Bolten. According to the 1880 Federal Census of Darke County, Ohio p.291/1 Lines 13-18, taken June 3,1880, Film # T-9 Roll #1010 Juliet was 39 prior to June1, 1880, keeping house and widowed. Her fathers birthplace was New Jersey and her mothers birthplace was Ohio. In Richland Township, Darke County, Ohio, Juliet (Julia) is listed as head of household, living in the house with her are her daughters Dama, Lois, Florence, Laura M., and Morrison Boltin her brother (in-law). Juliet is recorded in the 1890 Veterans Census in Greenville, Darke County, Ohio. Juliet moved around 1914 to Winona Lake, Kosciusko County, Indiana. She died on December 31, 1926 in Greenville, Darke County, Ohio. Her cause of death was Capillary Pneumonia with contributing factors to her death being old age and general Arteriosclerosis.

Mrs. J. S. Boltin Passed Away Early Today

Well Known Former Resident of This City Died at Greenville Hospital With Pneumonia at 6:40 O'Clock This Morning. Visiting Sister Here Over Holidays. Mrs. Juliette Smith Boltin, aged former resident of Greenville died at 6:40 o'clock this morning at the hospital in this city with pneumonia. Mrs. Boltin, whose late home was at Winona Lake, Indiana was visiting over the Christmas season with her sister Mrs. Ruth Lecklider at 407 Wayne Avenue, when she was stricken seriously ill. The deceased woman was 84 years, 3 months and 13 days of age.
She leaves to mourn their great loss, four daughters, Dora, Lois, Florence, and Mabel, two sisters, Mrs. Lecklider of this city and Miss Jeanett Smith and one brother Coleman Smith. Services will be held Monday morning at 10 o'clock at Mrs. Lecklider's home with Rev. Etter officiating. Internment in the Beamsville cemetery.

Pneumonia is Fatal to Aged Visitor
Mrs. Julia Smith Boltin of Winona Lake, Ind., Who Came Here to Visit Relatives Two Months Ago, Passes Away Friday Morning After a Week's Illness. Mrs. Julia Smith Boltin, 86, a former resident of this city, died Friday morning at 6:40 at the Greenville hospital, after an illness of a week, from pneumonia.
Mrs. Boltin, whose home is in Winona Lake, Ind., came here two months ago for a visit with her sister Mrs. Ruth Lecklider, 407 Euclid Ave. and her illness followed. The deceased lady was born in Darke county, and spent her early life here in this vicinity. She is survived by four daughters, Dana, Lois, Florence and Mabel, two sisters, Mrs. Lecklider and Miss Jennie Smith, and a brother, Coleman Smith, all of Greenville. Funeral services at the home of Mrs. Lecklider Monday morning at 10 o'clock, Rev. Etter, officiating. Burial in the Greenville cemetery.

Juliet Boltin was born in Darke Co. Ohio 1840 and passed away December 31, 1926. being 86 years 3 months and 12 days of age. Her husband Philip Boltin departed this life 1879. To this union were born six children, four daughters of whom survive her. Dana Boltin of Winona Lake, Indiana with whom she has made her home since 1914 at which she became a permanent invalid, Lois McGee of Fort Wayne, Indiana, Florence Hough of Fort Myers, Florida and Mable Hereford of Detroit, Michigan; also two sisters Mrs. Jennie Smith and Mrs. Ruth Lecklider, with whom she was visiting at the time of her death, and one brother Coleman Smith. She also leaves seven grandchildren of whom she was in-ordinately fond and proud, and seven great-grandchildren. At an early age, 16 years, she joined the Christian church with which she was affiliated until her death.
During the thirteen years of her invalidism she endeared herself to her many friends of Winona Lake by her sunny cheerfulness and her resignation of her afflication. She many times expressed her willing submission to God's will and padded many hours composing rhymes and verses. Services where conducted at the home of her sister, Mrs. Lecklider, in charge of Rev. J. E. Etter. Internment was made at Beamsville.

She was buried on January 3, 1927 in Beamsville Cemetery, Richland Township, Darke County, Ohio. Tombstone Inscription: Mother, Juliet Boltin, Sept. 18, 1840, Dec 30, 1926. Etched in the upper left hand corner is a grouping of three daisy like flowers.


Coleman Smith was born in Ohio. Coleman married Lydia A. Miner sometime before 1840. Coleman and Lydia had Juliet, Elias, Sarah, Eliza Jeanett, Coleman, Ruth Ann, and Samatha Eunice. Coleman died before the 1860 census was taken.

Lydia A. Miner was born in 1822 in Ohio. She appears on the census on July 18, 1860 in Richland Township, Darke County, Ohio. This census lists Lydia A. Smitt as head of household. She is age 29, born in Ohio. Also in this household are: Elias, age 18, born Michigan. Sarah, age 16, born Indiana. Eliza J., age 12, born Indiana. Coleman, age 9, born Indiana. Ruth A., age 7, born Indiana. Samantha, age 6, born Indiana. Lydia can not read or write. Lydia died in 1868 in Beamsville, Darke County, Ohio and is buried in Beamsville Cemetery, Richland Township, Darke County, Ohio.
