Maternal Maternal Line

Mary Rhodes was born on September 10, 1809. She is one of eight children born to John T. Rhodes and Mary Sheeller\Sheely. Mary married Solomon Hough in 1832. Mary and Solomon were the parents of Elizabeth, Peter, Charlotte, Joseph and Jacob Rhodes. Mary died on April 4, 1899 and is buried in Hoffman Cemetery, Smithton, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania.


John T. Rhodes was born on November 3, 1778. He is my second direct ancestor of the nine children born to Henry Rhodes and Catherine Cramer, the other being his sister Elizabeth. John married Mary Sheeller\Sheely. John and Mary were the parents of Abraham, John, Samuel, Joseph, Henry, Elizabeth, Emanuel and Mary. John died on March 30, 1837.

Mary Sheeller\Sheely was born on January 16, 1780 and died on January 16, 1854.


Elizabeth Rhodes was born on May 28, 1775. She is the daughter of Henry Rhodes and Catherine Cramer. About 1800 Elizabeth married Michael Warner. Elizabeth and Michael were the parents of Elizabeth. In 1800 Elizabeth moved with her father and sister to Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. Elizabeth and Michael bought the Hill farm below Smithton. They later lived near Macbeth Post Office, which in 1936 was not far from Grandview Church. Elizabeth died on February 21, 1849.
Henry Rhodes was born on January 23, 1754 in Pennsylvania. He one of nine children born to James Rhodes and Elizabeth Owen. About 1773 Henry married Catherine Cramer. Henry and Catherine were the parents of nine children, two of which would be my direct ancestors. The children were Susan, Peter, Michael, Sarah, Mary, Elizabeth, John T., Henry and an unknown female child. In 1800 Henry along with his daughter Mary, wife of Joseph Smith and her family moved from Charleston Township, Chester County, Pennyslvania to Smithton, Westmoreland County, Pennyslvania. Henry died on January 23, 1828 in Pennsylvania.

Catherine Cramer was born on August 13, 1755 and died on November 13, 1836.


James Rhodes was born on May 15, 1722. He is the youngest son of Joseph Rhodes and Abigail Bonsall. James married Elizabeth Owen on June 22, 1745 at the Darby Meeting, Delaware County, Pennsylvania. James and Elizabeth were the parents of Hannah, Joseph, Susanna, Rebecca, Henry, Owen, Tacy, James and Elizabeth. James died on August 3, 1778 on the second day of the week between five and six in the afternoon at the age of 56 years, 2 months and 19 days. He was buried on August 5, 1778 in the forenoon.
Joseph Rhodes was born on February 5, 1680 in Derbyshire, England. He was the youngest child born to John Rhodes and Elizabeth Jessop. Joseph married Abigail Bonsall on July 2, 1702 at the Darby Meeting in Delaware County, Pennsylvania. Joseph and Abigail were the parents of Mary, Elizabeth, Abigail, John, Joseph, Benjamin and James. When John Rhodes died Joseph inherited his land and in 1702, established a tanyard on the property. When Joseph died in 1732 his widow, Abigail and youngest son, James, continued the business.
John Rhodes was born in 1639 in Darby County, England, the son of Francis Rodes and Elizabeth Lassells. Prior to 1660 John married Elizabeth Jessop. John and Elizabeth were the parents of Samuel, Adam, Mary, John, Elizabeth, Jacob, Abraham, Sarah, Hannah and Joseph. John's occupation was that of a cordwainer. In 1696 he purchased land on High Street, which in 1936 was known as Market Street, in Philadelphia, Pennyslvania. In 1700 he sold the land in Philadelphia and bought a farm in Darby, Delaware County, Pennsylvania. John died in 1701 in Darby, Delaware County, Pennsylvania.
