the middle child born to Benjamin Franklin Cruzen and Nancy
G. Maltimore. Cassie married
John David Breeze on November
29, 1880 at the home of Franklin Cruzen, James Snow Magistrate
married the couple in the presence of J. H. Dewkes & Theodore
Smith & others. Their marriage license is recorded in Jefferson
County, Illinois Marriage Register, 1863-1893, page 14, license
# 251 November 27, 1880. John D. Breeze age 19 to Miss Cassie
Cruzen age 18, consent by parents of groom. The license was returned
December 3, 1880. Cassie and John David were the parents of Charles
David, Lilly Maud, Heber Erman, Grace, Franklin Cornelius, Olive
Myrtle, Lester William, Ernest Vernon, an unnamed girl, Nancy
Zetta and Anna May. Cassie died on November 29, 1933 in Union
County, Illinois.
Her obituary appeared in the Mount Vernon Register News on November 29, 1933 in Mount Vernon, Jefferson County, Illinois.
Death of Wife Ends Wedded Life of Half
Century - Mrs. Cassie Breeze, Wife of John D. Breeze of Dix, Died
Early Today on 50th Wedding Anniversary, After Lingering Illness.
Mrs. Cassie Breeze, wife of John D. Breeze of Dix died at an early
hour this morning, after a lingering illness. Before marriage
Mrs. Breeze was Miss Cassie Cruzen, daughter of Frank and Nancy
Cruzen, highly respected residents of Jefferson county in their
day. Mrs. Breeze is survived by her husband, John D. Breeze and
seven children, as follows: Mrs. Lillie Barton, Walnut Hill; Frank
C. Breeze, DuQuoin; Heber Breeze and Mrs. Nancy Bullock, Mount
Vernon; and Lester and Ernest Breeze and Mrs. May Harvey of Dix,
and a number of grandchildren. Mrs. Breeze died on the 50th anniversary
of her marriage to Mr. Breeze, this being their anniversary. Mrs.
Breeze was a woman of many virtues universally loved and respected
by all who knew her, and left nothing undone to ensure the welfare
and happiness of her family and loved ones. She was a homemaker
in the fullest sense of the word. She practiced her religion living
a life of great usefulness, her example being an inspiration to
those who knew her. She was for many years a member of the Christian
church. She had been in greatly impaired health for sometime and
seemed unable to rally. Friends may view he(r) body at the home
in Dix at any convenient time up to the hour of the funeral. Funeral
services conducted by the Rev. F. O. Fannon, of Centralia will
be held Friday morning at 11 o'clock in Little Grove church and
burial will follow in the cemetery adjoining.
She was buried on December 1, 1933 in Little
Grove Cemetery, Walnut Hill, Illinois. Tombstone inscription is
Cassie 1862-1933, this is a shared tombstone with her husband
John D.. At the top of the tombstone is the Masonic symbol and
below that is the surname Breeze.
Benjamin Franklin
Cruzen was born on February 20, 1835 in Xenia, Green County,
Ohio. The middle child of James Phillips Cruzen and Nancy
Glass. He was also known as Franklin
P. or Frank Cruzen. In 1857 he was married to Nancy G. Maltimore in Marion County, Illinois.
Frank and Nancy would be the parents of Eldon, Cora, Cassie, William
Emerson and Ann. Frank died on August 22, 1911 and was buried
in Little Grove Cemetery, Walnut Hill, Illinois.
James
Phillips Cruzen was born on March 30, 1806 in Greene County,
Ohio. James is one of ten children born to Cornelius Cruzen\Kroesen
and Hannah Sheeley. James married
Nancy Glass on December 28, 1828
in Ohio. James and Nancy were the parents of Eli W., John William,
Benjamin Franklin, Clark and Sarepta. According to the 1840 Census
J. P. Cruzen is in Silver Creek Township, Greene County, Ohio.
In his household are two males under 5; two males between 5 and
10; one male between 30 and 40; and one female between 30 and
40, there is no occupation listed. James died on August 25, 1872
and was buried in Little Grove Cemetery, Walnut Hill, Illinois.
Cornelius
Cruzen\Kroesen was born on February 1, 1769 in Somerset, New
Jersey. One of seven children born to Derrick Richard Kroesen
and Elizabeth Van Nuys. Cornelius was christened in the
Hillsborough Dutch Reformed Church of Somerset County, New Jersey
on February 26, 1769. On March 24, 1800, he was married to Hannah
Sheeley in Harpers Ferry, Berkley
County, Virginia. Cornelius and Hannah were the parents of Margaret,
Elizabeth, Rachel, James Phillips, Abigail, Harvey, Mary, John
S., William and Bertha. Cornelius died on August 30, 1835 in Silver
Creek Township, Greene County, Ohio. He was buried in Sheeley
Cemetery, Silver Creek Township, Greene County, Ohio.
Derrick
Richard Kroesen was probably born in Somerset, New Jersey.
Derrick was a member of the Dutch Reformed Church. Derrick married
Elizabeth
Van Nuys. Derrick and Elizabeth
were the parents of Isaac, Catrina, Elizabeth, Derrick, Jacob,
Cornelius and Jacob.
